We are dedicated to helping people from Derby and Derbyshire’s multi-ethnic communities take control of their sexual and reproductive health.

As well as practical support such as translation and chaperone services, we run outreach from easy-to-access community venues.

If you work in sexual and reproductive healthcare, there are lots of ways you can get involved and help us reach more people.

Contact our diversity champion

Our Sexual Health Promotion Practitioner Charles Dewa is focused on finding new ways to increase engagement with our different ethnic communities. He works to understand how cultural, ethnic and religious diversity affects sexual health.

“I value diversity through treating people as equals, giving our clients the confidentiality, dignity and respect they deserve, and celebrating differences.”

If you have questions or suggestions for Charles, or need his advice on delivering inclusive services, please contact him.

Help deliver sexual health awareness campaigns

In order to reach different communities in Derby and Derbyshire, and create positive health outcomes, we run impactful sexual health campaigns.

PrEP impact trial

Derbyshire Integrated Sexual Health Service was involved in a national PrEP impact trial aimed at reducing HIV infections. Our work included signing up participants from diverse communities.

After a successful trial, we now offer free PrEP subscriptions to high-risk groups, including people of African and Caribbean heritage. Our aim is to reach zero HIV transmissions by 2030.

National HIV Testing Week and World AIDS Day

Certain communities are disproportionately affected by HIV. For example, people from Black and Asian ethnic groups are more likely to be diagnosed late.

Along with Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council, we run yearly community campaigns to promote awareness of HIV and late-stage or advanced HIV.

Train with us

If you work in a community setting and think your staff could benefit from training on how to increase sexual health engagement with minority ethnic communities, we can help.

We can support you to have better conversations with service-users about their sexual health and wellbeing. This includes supplying free condoms and increasing awareness of HIV, PrEP and STIs.

Our sexual health promotion team also offers staff awareness training aimed at creating inclusive workplaces.
